Gmelin, as most of contemporary scientists, was a person of encyclopedic knowledge who did not split science into strictly specialized disciplines and was interested in everything. Generally speaking, he was a careful observer looking with eyes wide open at the surrounding world. Take any field he was involved in, everywhere Gmelin achieved sound results: the thesis he defended in Tubingen was in medicine, in St. Petersburg he became a professor of chemistry and natural history, he joined the expedition team as a botanist.
