Glorious Baikal – the Omul Barrel

Sukhanova Lyubov

“Only omul caught in Baikal is the real omul!” Does modern molecular-genetic research support the opinion of gourmets?

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Baikal omul is as well known as the lake itself. For many people these notions are inseparable and mean something unique. According to the up-to-date scientific classification, the Baikal omul is a variety of the Arctic omul, inhabitant of the Arctic Ocean. However, using molecular-phylogenetic methods it was proved that the Baikal omul is nothing but a form of the common whitefish that has adapted to the specific habitat conditions.

More information on these and other subjects you can find in the printed version of our journal.
