Geographical Discoveries: Tour around Baikal Bottom

Sherstyankin Pavel and Marc De Batist

Several years ago Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Irkutsk) initiated setting up of an international team that consisted of scientists and navy men: a Russian rear admiral and a Spanish professor, a Doctor of Science from Irkutsk and post-graduate students from Belgium. The objective of the project was to compile a new map of the deepest lake using all the available bathymetric (echo-sounding, topographic, and seismic) data and high technologies. Now you can see the result – a new digital “setting” for the pearl of our planet, Lake Baikal.

More information on these and other subjects you can find in the printed version of our journal.
